Midwest Ear, Nose & Throat Specialists was founded by Andrew Hilger, M.D. in 1912. He began this practice upon his return from advanced training in Vienna. At the time, this was the only exclusive otolaryngology practice in existence between Chicago and Seattle.
In the 1930s, he was joined by his nephew Jerome Hilger, M.D. who expanded the practice's commitment to include medical education and research. Dr. Jerome Hilger was instrumental in the development of otolaryngology as a specialty both regionally and nationally. He served as president of the American Academy of Otolaryngology. He also developed the Hilger Facial Nerve Stimulator used throughout the world to this day.
During the 1950s, Midwest ENT increased in size and major initiatives were undertaken. The development of an otology research laboratory at St. Joseph's Hospital was carried out under the direction of Dr. Albert Hohmann, M.D.. A program in head and neck oncology was also developed at St. Joseph's Hospital that established Midwest ENT Specialists as one of the premier centers for head and neck cancer in the Upper Midwest.
The 1980s and 1990s brought geographic enlargement with the expansion to four clinic sites to better serve the growing East Metro community. In addition, Midwest ENT extended its care to western Wisconsin with the introduction of outreach clinics.
This time also brought an expanded commitment to medical education as we took an active role in the family practice training program at Health East and the pediatric training program at Children's Hospital.
In the late 1970s Midwest Hearing was established to provide advanced diagnostic rehabilitative audiologic services. In 1986, Midwest ENT and St. Paul Eye Clinic made a major commitment to patient care by establishing Midwest Eye & Ear Institute, a same-day surgery center. It provides otolaryngology and ophthalmology surgical services exclusively. This commitment has made it the premier outpatient surgery center in the Twin Cities.
The latter part of the 1990s has seen innovative developments in clinical programs. Midwest Voice was created to provide cutting-edge therapy for voice disorders. Midwest Pediatric ENT provides for advanced treatment of difficult pediatric otolaryngology problems. The Midwest Center for Facial Plastic and Aesthetic Skin Care was developed in 1998 to provide sophisticated aesthetic and reconstructive care. Finally the Midwest Center for Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea was created in 1999 to more formally address the practice's involvement in sleep disordered breathing.
As Midwest Ear, Nose & Throat Specialists approaches its centennial year, the physicians and staff remain dedicated to highest-quality otolaryngology care.
