Midwest Pediatric ENT provides for the unique needs of the difficult pediatric patient. Children with medically complex problems such as craniofacial deformities, cancer, immune deficiencies and airway abnormalities are best cared for by physicians who have extensive training and experience in pediatric care. As physicians who have dedicated their practices to the care of children, Dr. Barbara Malone and Dr. Richard Karlen, working in conjunction with other pediatric subspecialty services, are able to provide sophisticated treatment for the medically complex pediatric patient.

Our scope of practice includes:

Treatment of children with:

  • Craniofacial abnormalities such as cleft lip and palate
  • Congenital ear malformations such as microtia and aural atresia
  • Hemangiomas, vascular malformations and lymphatic malformations (cystic hygromas)
  • Airway disorders such as laryngomalacia, tracheomalacia, subglottic stenosis and papillomas
  • Airway and esophageal foreign bodies
  • Medically complex diseases such as Down syndrome, cystic fibrosis and immune deficiency
  • Head and neck neoplasms (benign or malignant growths)
  • Sinusitis including endoscopic sinus surgery
  • Tonsils and adenoid disorders, including obstructive sleep apnea syndrome
  • Middle ear conditions such as chronic otitis media, cholesteatoma and conductive hearing loss
  • Swallowing disorders

Our Pediatric Otolaryngology Team

Richard G. Karlen, M.D.

Dr. Karlen joined our outstanding team of otolaryngologists in 2001. He has dedicated his practice to the subspecialty of pediatric otolaryngology with special interest in disorders of the pediatric airway, pediatric head and neck tumors, and pediatric otologic problems. Dr. Karlen graduated summa cum laude from the University of Minnesota and received his doctor of medicine degree from the University of Minnesota. During his junior year of medical school, Dr. Karlen was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. After completing his residency in otolaryngology at the University of Minnesota Hospitals and Clinics, Dr. Karlen served four years in the United States Air Force as chief of otolaryngology at Sheppard Air Force Base. Upon returning to Minnesota, Dr. Karlen completed advanced training in pediatric otolaryngology under the direction of Dr. Barbara Malone at Children's Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota. He is board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology. Dr. Karlen is a member of the Society for Ear, Nose and Throat Advances in Children; a fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngology; and a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology's Committee on Pediatric ENT.

Barbara Newman Malone, M.D.

Barbara Newman Malone, M.D. is a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School and served her residency at the University of Minnesota Hospitals. She completed a fellowship in pediatric otolaryngology at Children's Hospital of Michigan. Dr. Malone practices the subspecialty of pediatric otolaryngology. She is an assistant clinical professor at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Malone has been chief of staff at St. Paul Children's Hospital (1993), chief of surgery for Children's Hospital and Clinics (1996 - present), and chief of peer review of the Anesthesia, Surgical, Pathology Division (2000 - 2004). Dr. Malone is a director of the board of Children's Hospital of Minnesota (2000 - present) and a member of the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology; the Society for Ear, Nose and Throat Advances in Children; and the American Medical Association. She joined the Midwest Ear, Nose & Throat Specialists in 1988.
